August 18th 2015: Thought of the Day

“Self Mastery is the DNA of Life Mastery” – Robin Sharma

What is the DNA of success? Self-Mastery!

What is the DNA of success? Self-Mastery!

Last night I was re-reading the The Monk who sold his Ferrari. While reading, I came across the quote above and it instantly made me think of yesterday’s thought of the day (Read More: Aug 17th: 2015 Thought of the Day). As I mentioned yesterday it is vital to have faith that all your efforts will coalesce together to form something remarkable.

But do not get me wrong, it will not happen all by itself. It requires you to take correct action. How do you make sure that you are taking correct action? You need to be constantly striving for self mastery. How can you create joy for others if you are not joyful yourself? How can you love others if you do not love yourself?

The thoughts of the day may seem “new age” and suspect but they do work. There is a reason this wisdom has been passed down for 1000’s of years. However, it does NOT preclude you from doing the hard work required to achieve self mastery and turn your dreams into reality.

So how do you develop self mastery? Learn the power of concentration. The mind has infinite powers when it is focused. Unfortunately, much of our mental power is frittered away in idle day dreaming or lost in the constant haze of distractions. Regaining control of your concentration will dramatically improve the quality of your life.

When was the last time you took time to enjoy the wonders of nature? Take time to smell the flowers before its all over.

When was the last time you took time to enjoy the wonders of nature? Take time to smell the flowers before its all over.

My favorite technique to regain my concentration is to find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed (preferably nature) and find a flower/plant/tree that you enjoy looking at. Then for as long as possible gaze at the flower/plant/tree and keep ALL your focus on the it. When your attention does wonder, do no worry, just gently bring back your focus to the flower/plant/tree. Do not judge yourself or get angry about your attention wandering. At first this will be very difficult and uncomfortable. With time you will notice not only do you improve at this exercise but your life will blossom. Do not let the simplicity of this technique belie its power.

Be Happy and Chase your Dreams,
