April 10th 2015: Thought of the Day

Always gon’ be a bigger house somewhere, but n**ga feel me
Long as the people in that motherfucker love you dearly
Always gon’ be a whip that’s better than the the one you got
Always gon’ be some clothes that’s fresher than the ones you rock
Always gon’ be a bitch that’s badder out there on the tours
But you ain’t never gon’ be happy till you love yours

This is a verse from Love Yourz from J Cole’s new album 2014 Forrest Hills Drive. I have mentioned this specific verse in a previous post (Read More: Book Review: What I know for sure by Oprah Winfrey). However, this is such a profound verse, and I needed to really crystallize my thoughts on this particular topic as it has been something that I have been struggling with a lot recently.

When I was in high school I was absolutely hell bent on being an NCAA division one basketball player. So much to the detriment of me actually enjoying high school. Obviously I would want nothing to have changed, even the bad because that has been integral in shaping me into the person I am today. However, if I was advising someone else, I would say: “RELAX!”

I was so blessed to have a loving and supporting family, grow up in Canada (the greatest country in the world 😉), and got to do something I love (play basketball) on a daily basis. However I believed with all my heart that I could not truly be happy until I signed my letter of intent and accomplished my goal. I am truly so grateful for my epic failure during my basketball career. It may seem strange to say that, but it really helped give me develop a mature perspective about life I would have never been able to otherwise.

So if you can’t find success through your achievements then what fills your heart with joy and lightness? It is living and being here and now. I think a lot of people, and I know I do much too often, live and act as if we would never die. This may be that last time you see that person you love so dearly. Instead of being anxious about the future, or wishing you had a nicer house or wishing you could be somewhere else. Be HERE and NOW with the person you love. This is something that can occur instantly and will dramatically change your current state AND your future.

Just to reinforce this absolutely important message, check out what J Cole had to say about his wonderful new song.

Be Happy and Chase your Dreams,
